Thanks a lot! I put a lot of work into that commission. I really enjoy working in watercolor and will do more, but probably not painted comics. They'd take me forever :-).

Do I even NEED to tell you how amazing this is!? No! I don't think I do. I'm sure either it has already been said in as many ways possible or you already KNOW it! If not, you damn well should!
:worship::bow:
But, alas I'll give it a whirl. The fact that this was done with india ink and a crow quill just blows me MIND!! And gouache!? With my ignorance, I'll admit I had to look it up. I always appreciate traditional art mediums FAR more then digital ones. They have so much more life and depth.
Keep up the amazing work!

Thanks a lot Meghan :-)

Gouache is sort of like pigmented watercolor. You can use it more opaquely like acrylics, oils, etc., but here I watered it down to be semi-transparent. I really only used it here with the black and gray washes that are under the regular watercolor. Plus some small color touch-ups in the end.
You can easily see this in the steps I posted.

Give it a whirl! And I think the more you master traditional mediums only makes for better digital work.

I like the use of color on this one. Not too high of chroma.

Thanks John! And as you know, in using real paints it's pretty natural to have less saturation and even impossible to get the intense colors often used digitally.
I could have pushed the color more after my scan but I left it closer to the original.

With more and more illustration going the digital route these days paintings tend to be over saturated and it's an eye sore. I'm glad you left the scan closer to the original. Grays and muted colors can make the higher chroma colors look wonderful and I think you did a good job of that here. And besides, if you had made the painting any more vibrant it would lose its sense of atmosphere.

I look forward to more paintings!
