Pencils ALEX ROSS
Inks Bill REINHOLD

Layouts John Paul Leon

The art for this page is an unusual one for the series. Three pages were actually only roughly laid out on smaller separate pieces of paper by JOHN PAUL LEON.
ALEX ROSS then followed and used this as reference to do complete pencils on the actual full sized page which I then inked. This is the only comic story I know of that Alex did full pencils on a few pages to be inked by another artist. On the Earth-X series often we all pitched in in different ways to get it done on time. It was not credited to Ross as penciler, just as some other pages that John or Alex inked were not credited to them in detail.

One reason it looks "cleaner" is because as described John didn't pencil but only did a rough layout separately and Alex then did full pencils in JPL's style, which I then inked in the style I usually inked John.

This page looks a little cleaner than the others.
LOVE IT!
I love Leon's work and one of the great things about his pencils is all the subtleties with him drawing and erasing and redrawing. His thought process is right out there on the page.
Even your inking Bill is a little cleaner. I know Alex Ross is a master but still goes to show no artist can be completly duplicated.

I've read Earth- X through and through 2-3 times now and you guys did an excellent job on that series, all the way from script to the layout, pacing, heavy contrast of the inks and toned down color schemes. Wonderful book all in all and I'm glad I get to tell you guys that here. You've got some true talent going.

Beautifully done! Its too bad Alex Ross did not get credited for this work. I hear that happens very rarely in the industry, but when it does, the artwork (in both comic and art pages) are a collectors treat.

I grew up watching great masters of comics in Argentina, who knew the master of drawing contrast and shading, I can not ignore my past and I like seeing that kind of work!

good to see you work!! :headbang:

Alex really kept it to the feel JPL set up for the series. Different than John but in the same vein.

Great artists for us al to learn from.

Tools don't really matter as mush as the drawing.
I prefer pen and brush, but Alex Toth used markers and made it look great!

Never inked Lee, but I got to know him when he started at Wildstorm.
For a long time he sent me xeroxes of his pencils for me to critique starting in like 1997 or 8. He sent me his early Resident Evil, Widcats, Gen 13, and Gen 13/Superman.

Of course as time went on I found little to say. His work very quickly improved. And of course now it's great!

Thanks Richard! The pencils by Ross were tight, but on this just like on JPL's work the trick for me was not to do too much.

Ross and I were trying to keep it towards John's style to fit with the rest of the story.

Thanks Shane! The first time I ever noticed someone leaving line open here and there was when I was inked by Mike Gustovich on the Badger.
Made me think differently about my work after that.
